ON THE TOWN heads to B'way

Howard & Janet Kagan have announced that a new B’way revival of ON THE TOWN  will open in Oct 2014 at the Lyric Theatre (formerly the Foxwoods). This year marks the 70th anniversary of the opening of this iconic musical comedy created by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, Adolph Green & Jerome Robbins. The Lyric Theatre will be reopened after a renovation being completed by its new owners, Ambassador Theatre Group. “On The Town” will be directed by John Rando who helmed the recent City Center Encores and Barrington Stage productions, and will feature choreography by Joshua Bergasse. The Bronx is up, the Battery's down, and three sailors are hoping to get just a little bit lucky on their one day of leave in the Big Apple. This production will feature the original orchestrations, performed by 28 musicians led by musical director James Moore. The production will feature scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, lighting design by Jason Lyons, costume design by Jess Goldstein & sound design by Kai Harada. For the record, “On the Town” grew out of the Jerome Robbins ballet Fancy Free, about three sailors on leave in New York, which debuted in 1944 with the American Ballet Theatre. The musical opened at Broadway’s Adelphi Theater later that year, directed by George Abbott, and played a total of 462 performances, transferring to the 44th Street and Martin Beck along the way…
