Negro Ensemble Company & Signature Theatre celebrate Leslie Lee

On Mon Mar 24 The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. (Charles Weldon, Artistic Dir; Karen Brown, Executive Dir) and Signature Theatre (James Houghton, Founding Artistic Dir; Erika Mallin, Executive Dir) will unite in a day-long celebration of the life and works of playwright Leslie Lee. Lee passed away in New York City on Jan 20. The celebration begins at 3:00 PM with a memorial service honoring Leslie Lee, curated by Heather Massie, founder of The Leslie Lee Legacy Fund.  The event will feature excerpts from some of Mr Lee’s plays and speakers include Ruben Santiago-HudsonStephen McKinley Henderson, Charles Weldon & Douglas Turner Ward.  NEC continues the tribute with a 7:00 PM reading of Legends, one of Lee’s most recent plays which has not been produced previously.  Immediately following the reading, there will be a VIP reception in tribute to Mr. Lee. The day of celebration for Leslie Lee will be held at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 W 42nd St). The 3pm Memorial is free and open to the public.  Tickets for the 7pm reading of Legends produced by The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc by calling Ticket Central at 279-4200.
