The Gospel according to St. Matthew, 1970's style. As Jesus taught with parables and storytelling, Godspell utilizes clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville to tell the story of Christ's passion. Familiar songs include "Day by Day," "Turn Back, O Man" and "Bless the Lord."
A production of “Godspell,” directed by Danny Goldstein, was slated to open on Oct 23, 2008 at the Ethel Barrymore under the auspices of Adam Epstein, but was postponed. For the record, “Godspell” was originally a senior thesis directing project for Carnegie Mellon University Master of Fine Arts candidate John-Michael Tebelak in 1970. After transferring to La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, producers Edgar Lansbury & Joseph Beruh moved the production Off-B’way and hired Stephen Schwartz to pen an original score. The production opened at the Cherry Lane Theatre on May 13, 1971. In August of 1971, “Godspell” moved to the Promenade and then made its Broadway debut on June 22, 1976 at the Broadhurst. Daniel Goldstein directed a production of “Godspell” at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ in the Fall of 2006.
