A musical based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for "Nights of Cabiria" and conceived by Bob Fosse, "Sweet Charity" focuses on Charity Hope Valentine who, despite her job at a seedy dime-a-dance joint, is an incurable optimist. Charity never stops looking for true love and never seems to look for it in the right places.
The original production of “Sweet Charity” opened on Jan 29, 1966 at the Palace under the auspices of Fryer, Carr & Harris Inc. Bob Fosse directed and choreographed a cast which featured Gwen Verdon (“Charity”), John McMartin, Helen Gallagher, Thelma Oliver & James Luisi. “Sweet Charity” was revived by Jerome Minskoff, James M Nederlander, Arthur Rubin & Joseph Harris at the Minskoff on Apr 27, 1986. Mr Fosse returned to direct and choreograph a cast which featured Debbie Allen as “Charity.”
